"Good letter Michael." Pace
It may be a song, but is it great music? Tallahassee Democrat, January 10, 2008
Re: "State song search is more than just a contest" (My View, Jan. 8).
James Perry of the Florida Music Educators Association makes a valiant attempt to distance his organization from the fracas over the selection of the new Florida song, as a good executive director should. And we should accept that the FMEA did the best it could in handling the process.
Let's face it, the problem began when "the FMEA, as music experts, partnered with Sen. Tony Hill and Rep. Ed Homan to manage the process " The FMEA is an organization made up of experts in music education, not necessarily in song-writing. Their members teach instrument performance and probably some basic composition and music theory. However, true song-writing is a heartfelt artistic expression via a memorable melody, with topical lyrics, built upon a solid "hook" and a strong chorus. Like painting and poetry, some people have it and some people don't. Some notable Floridians have it. Billy Dean, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffett, Greg Allman, to name a few. Too bad the FMEA leadership didn't have the wherewithal to engage these valuable artistic resources native to our state, to lend their ear to the judging, and make "the process" unquestionable by having it made by true song-writing artists.
