 "Army pensions" and other compensation to veterans is earned, deserved and a necessary expense for our national defense.  Some of my relatives have died or been injured for our freedom.  My brother is retired military.  Compensation to or military is earned income not an entitlement. I thank all veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice for my freedom.

There exists a Problem with Pensions of all varieties.  Ideally, one's total compensation would be paid in cash.  One could then spend for the "benefits of all sorts" a worker chooses.  This would include the workers choice of insurance, disability, child care, health club, transportation and retirement [pensions].  Depending on a government or private pension may sound secure; but, if our government decides to print double the money in circulation, one's pension may be worth half what one expected.

Payment in cash, prior to withholding, would also be helpful as a reminder of how much tax is paid.  "Pensions," be they government guaranteed or private are usually "out of sight and out of mind" and sometimes promote a false sense of financial security.  Nothing is really guaranteed.  Actively managing, understanding and reviewing one's retirement options is better than passively totally depending on someone else, a company or a government pension or retirement program.   Pace
