"This Resolution was hand delivered by me to

Rep. Ed Homan on December 11, 2007. "  Pace

Proposed 2008

Concurrent Resolution of the

Florida House and Senate

Be it resolved, "The S'wanee River (Old Folks at Home)," written by Stephen Foster shall remain Florida's official state song.

Be it resolved, modern versions of the song have been taught to the children of Florida since 1978. Stephen Foster sought to humanize the characters in his songs and to have them care for one another and convey a sense that all people--regardless of their ethnic identities share the same longings. In his own words, he sought to "build up taste...among refined people by making words suitable to their taste, instead of the trashy and really offensive words which belong to some songs..."  One of Stephen Foster's missions was to reform black-face stage performance.

Be it resolved, the following Modern Version is hereby adopted to add two verses and a refrain and become part of Florida's official state song.

Modern Version

Verse 1

Way down upon the S’wanee River,

Far, far away.

There’s where my heart is turning ever.

There’s where the old folks stay.

Verse2

All up and down the whole creation,

Sadly I roam.

Still longing for my dear old homeplace,

And for the old folks at home.

Refrain

All the world is sad and dreary,

Everywhere I roam.

Oh, loved ones how my heart grows weary,

Far from the old folks at home
