Don't forget about the greats of the swing era – Tallahassee Democrat
Re: "I'm in heaven at the Ritz" (blog, Jan. 8).
I enjoyed reliving my misspent youth with Chris Timmons, having been to the Algonquin Hotel in New York, but too young then to enjoy the Scotch he mentions.
Other great places were the Waldorf, Warwick, Roosevelt, Carlton House and maybe the Ritz envisioned by the headline writer. There was Rockefeller Center and the Rockettes and the Empire State Building, plus the biggest toy department I ever saw in Macy's.
But other greats besides Fred Astaire mentioned by Timmons, and probably omitted because of space limitations, were the big bands of the swing era: The Dorseys, Lombardo, Goodmans, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Count Basie, Woody Herman. And all the singers like Billie Holliday, Doris Day, Lena Horne, Nat Cole ... and, oh, yes, Frank Sinatra, who revitalized all those old tunes into the '90s.
It was a great era, not to mention two 1939 World's Fairs.
As Bob Hope used to sing, " Thanks for the Memories."
